Nova Surge — Free Browser Space Shooter & Bullet Hell Game
Nova Surge is a free, no-download arcade space shooter you can play instantly in your browser. Drag anywhere on the screen and your starfighter follows your finger — or your mouse on desktop — while its guns fire on their own. Your job is pure piloting: weave through bullet storms, graze shots for bonus points, build one of five distinct weapons, and take down the Dreadnought and Vortex boss ships. Between runs, six career medals track your lifetime feats and each grants a permanent perk. Built mobile-first with its own procedural synth soundtrack, it plays beautifully with one thumb on a phone and just as well on a desktop.
How to Play
- Fly by dragging. Touch and drag anywhere — the ship rides just above your finger so it's never hidden by your thumb. On desktop, the ship follows your mouse; press Enter on the title screen to launch, and P or Escape to pause.
- Your guns never stop. Firing is automatic, so all your attention goes into dodging and positioning.
- Build your weapon. Five weapon pickups drop from enemies: V (Vulcan) is the classic spread of up to five parallel streams, L (Lance) fires fast rail bolts that pierce through multiple enemies, P (Plasma) lobs slow orbs that detonate for area damage, R (Ricochet) throws spinning discs that bounce off screen edges and enemy hulls, and T (Tesla) fires auto-aiming chain lightning that arcs between nearby ships. Grab your current letter to level up (max five); grab a different letter to switch weapons without losing your level.
- Lock in your favorite. Tap the on-screen lock button (or press L) to lock your weapon — while locked you won't switch, and off-type pickups convert into salvage points instead.
- Detonate nova bombs. Press Space or tap the round B button in the corner to wipe out every regular enemy on screen. You can bank up to three bombs.
- Grab the support drops: B banks an extra bomb, H repairs one heart of hull, and M brings homing missiles online.
- Graze to charge fever. Letting enemy bullets skim past without hitting you pays bonus points and fills the fever meter. A full meter triggers fever mode: double points, double fire rate, and a brief slow-motion rush.
- Survive the boss waves. Every fifth wave brings the Dreadnought; every tenth summons the Vortex. Both get tougher the deeper you go — and the stronger your weapon is — and they enrage as their health drops.
- Earn career medals. Six medals track lifetime feats across all your runs — ships destroyed, bosses beaten, perfect waves, bullets grazed, career score — and each medal you earn grants a permanent perk like an extra starting bomb, a higher starting weapon level, longer missiles, wider grazes, longer combo chains, or an extra heart of hull. Your best score and medal progress save in your browser.
Tips & Strategy
- Getting hit costs more than a heart. Taking damage also knocks your weapon down a level and resets your combo — dodging well is how you keep your firepower.
- Match the weapon to the moment. Vulcan is the safe all-rounder, Lance shreds bosses and columns by piercing through everything in a line, Plasma's detonations clear packed waves, Ricochet keeps dealing damage while you focus on dodging — its discs carom around on their own — and Tesla is the only weapon that aims itself, perfect when the screen is chaos, though its short range means staying close. Switching keeps your level, so swapping mid-run is never a setback.
- Lock once you've committed. With your weapon locked, most weapon drops arrive as your own letter — meaning more level-ups — and stray off-type pickups pay salvage instead of switching you at a bad moment.
- Graze on purpose. Skimming bullets pays bonus points and is the fastest way to charge fever — confident close dodges beat hiding in a corner.
- Save fever for crowds or bosses. Double points and double fire rate on a boss or a packed wave is worth far more than triggering it on a stray grunt.
- Bombs are panic buttons. A nova bomb clears every regular enemy instantly — spend one the moment a wave boxes you in rather than dying with three banked.
- Wipe the golden squadrons. Formations of five gold ships fly in together — destroy the whole squadron for a gold bonus before any escape off-screen.
- Protect your streak for perfect waves. Clearing a wave without taking a hit pays a perfect-wave bonus, counts toward the Untouchable medal, and your combo multiplier makes everything score higher.
- Expect the game to scale with you. The stronger your weapon, the bigger and meaner the waves — elites (triple-health ships that always drop a power-up) show up more often as your firepower grows, so focus them down. Deeper waves also shoot faster, and from wave six even basic grunts fire aimed shots.
- Play for the medals. They're long-haul career goals, but every one you finish makes all future runs permanently stronger — the game-over screen shows which medal you're closest to.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you play Nova Surge?
Drag anywhere on the screen — or move your mouse on desktop — and your starfighter follows while its guns fire automatically. Dodge enemy bullets, collect falling power-ups, and press Space or tap the on-screen B button to detonate a banked nova bomb, which wipes out every regular enemy on screen. You can pause any time with P, Escape, or the on-screen pause button.
What are the weapons and power-ups in Nova Surge?
There are five weapon pickups: V (Vulcan) is the classic spread of up to five parallel streams, L (Lance) fires fast rail bolts that pierce through multiple enemies, P (Plasma) lobs slow orbs that detonate for area damage, R (Ricochet) throws spinning discs that bounce off screen edges and enemy hulls, and T (Tesla) fires auto-aiming chain lightning that arcs between nearby ships. Grabbing your current weapon's letter again levels it up to a maximum of five; grabbing a different letter switches weapons while keeping your level. If you'd rather not switch, lock your weapon with the L key or the on-screen lock button — locked, off-type pickups convert into salvage points instead. B banks an extra nova bomb (you can hold up to three), H repairs one heart of hull, and M brings homing missiles online.
What is fever mode in Nova Surge?
Grazing — letting enemy bullets pass close by without hitting you — earns bonus points and charges the fever meter at the bottom of the screen. When the meter fills, fever mode kicks in for a few seconds: every kill scores double, your weapon fires twice as fast, and the action briefly slows down.
Does Nova Surge have boss fights?
Yes. Every fifth wave is a boss wave: the Dreadnought is the standard boss, and every tenth wave summons the Vortex instead. Boss health scales with the wave number and with your weapon level, bosses enrage as they take damage, and defeating one showers you with score gems and multiple power-ups.
Does Nova Surge save my progress?
Yes. Your best score and your career medal progress are saved in your browser, so they persist between visits on the same device. There are six career medals — earned across all your runs for feats like destroying ships, clearing perfect waves, and grazing bullets — and each one you earn grants a permanent perk, such as starting with an extra bomb, a higher weapon level, or an extra heart of hull.
